한화에어로스페이스, 호주 공장 2단계 증축 완료… 레드백 장갑차 생산 돌입! Hanwha Aerospace Completes Phase 2 Expansion of Australian Plant… Begins Redback Armored Vehicle Production

 한화에어로스페이스가 호주 현지 공장의 2단계 증축을 성공적으로 완료했다고 3월 13일 밝혔습니다. 이번 증축은 2023년 12월 호주 정부와 체결한 레드백 보병전투장갑차 129대 공급 계약 이후 약 2년 만에 이뤄졌으며, 생산 시설 확충으로 자주포와 장갑차를 동시에 생산할 수 있는 체제를 구축했습니다.

2단계 증축에는 제2생산동, 남반구 최대 규모의 전자파 적합성(EMI/EMC) 시험실, 대형 세척 시설, 완제품 보관동 등이 포함됐으며, 당초 계획보다 1개월 반 앞당겨 완공됐습니다. 추가로 약 3만2000㎡의 면적이 증설되어 총 시설 규모와 인력 수용 능력이 크게 확대되었습니다. 현재 호주 공장은 250명 이상의 사무 및 생산 인력을 수용할 수 있으며, 2개의 생산동과 1.2km 주행시험장, 시스템 통합 연구실, 도장 시설 등을 갖추고 있습니다.

호주 질롱시에 위치한 이 공장은 15만㎡ 규모 부지에 본관, 생산동, 조립장, 주행시험장, 사격장 등 총 11개 시설로 구성된 H-ACE(Hanwha Armoured vehicle Centre of Excellence)로, 한국 방산업체 최초의 해외 생산기지입니다. 누적 투자액은 약 2억2500만 호주달러(약 2367억원)에 달합니다.

한화에어로스페이스는 이번 공장을 호주와 한국뿐 아니라 인도·태평양 지역의 전략적 생산 및 정비(MRO) 거점으로 활용할 계획이며, 현지 방산 생태계 발전에 기여함과 동시에 지역 내 핵심 방산 생산 거점으로 성장시키겠다는 방침입니다.

Hanwha Aerospace announced on March 13, 2026, the successful completion of the second-phase expansion of its local manufacturing facility in Australia. This expansion was achieved approximately two years after signing a contract with the Australian government in December 2023 to supply 129 Redback Infantry Fighting Vehicles (IFVs), enabling a production system capable of simultaneously manufacturing self-propelled howitzers and armored vehicles.

The second-phase expansion includes the addition of a second production building, the Southern Hemisphere’s largest Electromagnetic Interference and Compatibility (EMI/EMC) testing laboratory, large-scale cleaning facilities, and a finished product storage building. The core facilities, including the second production building, were completed one and a half months ahead of schedule. Approximately 32,000 square meters were added, significantly increasing the total facility area and workforce capacity. Currently, the Australian plant accommodates over 250 administrative and production personnel and is equipped with two production buildings, a 1.2-kilometer testing track, a systems integration laboratory, and a painting facility.

Located in Geelong, Australia, the facility named H-ACE (Hanwha Armoured vehicle Centre of Excellence) sits on a 150,000-square-meter site and comprises 11 buildings, including a headquarters, production halls, assembly lines, testing tracks, and firing ranges. It is Korea’s first overseas defense manufacturing base. The cumulative investment in the facility amounts to approximately 225 million Australian dollars (about 236.7 billion KRW).

Hanwha Aerospace plans to utilize the Australian facility as a strategic production and Maintenance, Repair, and Overhaul (MRO) hub not only for Australia and South Korea but also for the broader Indo-Pacific region. The company aims to contribute to the development of the local defense ecosystem and establish the site as a key ground defense production hub in the region.
