LG에너지솔루션, 북미 ESS 생산 거점 5곳 확보해 급성장하는 북미 ESS 시장 정조준! LG Energy Solution Secures 5 North American ESS Production Bases, Targeting the Rapidly Growing North American ESS Market!

 LG에너지솔루션은 북미 ESS 시장 주도권 확보를 위해 5곳의 ESS 생산 거점을 잇달아 확보하며 생산 역량 확대에 속도를 내고 있습니다.

17일(현지 시각) 미국 테네시주 스프링힐의 얼티엄셀즈 공장에서 ESS용 LFP 배터리 셀 생산을 시작한다고 발표했습니다. 약 7000만 달러 규모의 설비 전환 투자를 통해 기존 전기차 배터리 생산라인 일부를 ESS 생산 라인으로 전환하며, 2분기부터 본격 양산할 예정입니다. 테네시 공장에서 생산된 배터리는 북미 ESS SI 법인 버텍을 통해 다양한 전력망 안정화 및 재생에너지 연계 프로젝트에 공급됩니다.

LG에너지솔루션은 미시간 홀랜드, 미시간 랜싱, 캐나다 넥스트스타 에너지 등 3개의 단독 공장과 함께 얼티엄셀즈 테네시 공장, 오하이오 혼다 합작공장에서도 ESS 제품 생산을 시작해 북미 5대 ESS 복합 제조 거점을 구축했습니다.

특히 미시간 홀랜드 공장은 북미 최초 대규모 ESS 배터리 양산 거점이며, 캐나다 넥스트스타 공장은 빠르게 수율을 안정화해 3개월 만에 100만 셀 생산에 성공했습니다. 미시간 랜싱 공장은 올해 상반기 중 ESS 생산을 개시하며 테슬라와 약 6조원 규모 공급계약을 체결해 높은 수주 역량을 보이고 있습니다. 오하이오 혼다 공장도 EV 일부 생산 라인을 ESS 생산으로 전환할 계획입니다.

이들 복합 거점은 EV와 ESS 배터리를 동시에 생산하며 설비 활용도를 극대화하고, 시장 변화에 유연하게 대응할 수 있도록 운영됩니다.

LG에너지솔루션은 올해 말까지 글로벌 ESS 생산능력을 60GWh 이상으로, 그 중 북미 지역은 50GWh 이상으로 확대할 계획이며, 지난해 140GWh 누적 수주를 기반으로 올해는 이를 능가하는 신규 수주 확대를 목표로 하고 있습니다.

이로써 LG에너지솔루션은 북미 ESS 시장에서 확고한 선도 지위를 구축하고 생산성 혁신과 수익성 강화를 통해 북미 사업 성장을 가속화할 전망입니다.

LG Energy Solution is accelerating the expansion of its production capacity by securing five ESS production bases in North America to strengthen its leadership in the North American ESS market.

On the 17th (local time), it announced the start of production of ESS LFP battery cells at Ultium Cells’ plant in Spring Hill, Tennessee, USA. Through an approximately 70 million dollar investment to convert existing electric vehicle battery production lines into ESS production lines, full-scale mass production is planned to begin in the second quarter. The batteries produced at the Tennessee plant will be supplied through LG Energy Solution’s North American ESS system integration subsidiary, Vertech, and used in various fields such as power grid stabilization projects and renewable energy-linked ESS facilities.

LG Energy Solution has established five major ESS mixed manufacturing bases in North America, including three independent plants (Michigan Holland, Michigan Lansing, and Canada NextStar Energy), as well as the Ultium Cells Tennessee plant and the Ohio Honda joint venture plant.

Notably, the Michigan Holland plant is the first large-scale ESS battery mass production base in North America. The Canada NextStar plant quickly stabilized its yield and surpassed one million cells produced within three months. The Michigan Lansing plant will start ESS production in the first half of this year and has demonstrated strong order capability by signing a supply contract worth about 6 trillion won with Tesla. The Ohio Honda plant also plans to convert some EV production lines to ESS production lines.

These mixed bases operate by producing EV and ESS batteries simultaneously, maximizing facility utilization and enabling flexible response to changing market conditions.

LG Energy Solution plans to expand its global ESS production capacity to over 60GWh by the end of this year, with more than 50GWh dedicated to the North American market. Based on the accumulated orders of about 140GWh as of last year, the company aims to exceed last year’s record-high new order volume of 90GWh this year.

With these efforts, LG Energy Solution is expected to accelerate growth in its North American business by securing a solid leading position in the North American ESS market while enhancing productivity innovation and profitability.
