LG에너지솔루션, 캐나다 최초∙유일의 배터리 공장 ‘넥스트스타 에너지’ 준공식 개최! LG Energy Solution Holds Completion Ceremony for Canada's First and Only Battery Plant, "NextStar Energy."

 LG에너지솔루션은 캐나다 온타리오주 윈저에 위치한 단독 생산법인 ‘넥스트스타 에너지’ 공장의 준공식을 3월 5일(현지 시각) 개최하며 북미 배터리 산업의 미래를 여는 중요한 이정표를 세웠다. 이번 행사에는 캐나다 온타리오주 수상 더그 포드, 연방 산업부 장관 멜라니 졸리, 산업통상부 김정관 장관, LG에너지솔루션 CEO 김동명 사장 등 양국 주요 인사가 참석했다.

넥스트스타 에너지는 캐나다 최초이자 유일한 대규모 배터리 제조 시설로, 423만 제곱피트(약 39만 m²) 면적에서 전기차 배터리와 AI 데이터센터, ESS 배터리 등 첨단 제품을 생산한다. 2022년 출범 이후 현재까지 50억 캐나다 달러(약 5조 원) 이상을 투자했고, 약 1300명의 직접 고용을 이루었으며 향후 2500명까지 고용을 확대할 계획이다.

더그 포드 수상은 이번 준공이 지역 일자리 창출과 제조 공급망 강화에 큰 역할을 할 것이라 평가했고, 멜라니 졸리 장관은 첨단 배터리 제조 시설이 한·캐나다 미래 모빌리티 협력의 성과라고 강조했다. 김정관 장관은 온타리오주와의 긴밀한 우정을 언급하며 이번 공장 건설을 양국 산업 협력의 상징으로 의미를 부여했다.

LG에너지솔루션 CEO 김동명 사장은 넥스트스타 에너지가 캐나다 전동화의 핵심 동력이라고 자신감을 표명했으며, 이훈성 법인장은 현지 경제 성장과 미래 에너지 산업 선도를 약속했다. 넥스트스타 에너지는 2022년 스텔란티스와 합작으로 출범해 2024년 모듈 생산과 2025년 셀 양산에 돌입했으며, 올해 2월 LG에너지솔루션 단독 운영 체제로 전환되었다. 현재 누적 100만 개 이상의 배터리 셀 생산 실적을 기록하며 북미 ESS 시장 수요에 적극 대응하고 있다.

LG Energy Solution held the completion ceremony for its wholly-owned production subsidiary, NextStar Energy, located in Windsor, Ontario, Canada, on March 5 (local time), marking a significant milestone in the future of the North American battery industry. The event was attended by key figures from both countries, including Ontario Premier Doug Ford, Canadian Minister of Innovation, Science and Industry Mélanie Joly, Korea’s Minister of Trade, Industry and Energy Kim Jung-kwan, LG Energy Solution CEO Kim Dong-myung, and NextStar Energy President Lee Hoon-sung.

NextStar Energy is Canada’s first and only large-scale battery manufacturing facility, covering 4.23 million square feet (approximately 390,000 m²). It produces advanced products such as electric vehicle batteries, AI data center batteries, and large-scale energy storage system (ESS) batteries. Since its establishment in 2022, the company has invested over 5 billion Canadian dollars (about 5 trillion Korean won) and currently employs approximately 1,300 people directly, with plans to expand employment to around 2,500 in the future.

Premier Doug Ford praised the plant’s completion as a major milestone for the region, highlighting its role in creating thousands of local jobs and strengthening the automotive and advanced manufacturing supply chains across Ontario. Minister Mélanie Joly emphasized that the advanced battery manufacturing facility is a result of future mobility cooperation between Korea and Canada, reinforcing Canada’s active role in shaping the future of mobility. Minister Kim Jung-kwan highlighted the close friendship with Ontario and regarded the plant as a symbol of industrial cooperation between the two countries.

LG Energy Solution CEO Kim Dong-myung expressed confidence that NextStar Energy will be a key driver of Canada’s electrification future. President Lee Hoon-sung underscored the meaningful achievement in showing strong economic growth momentum in Windsor and pledged to create lasting value for Canada’s economy through industry leadership.

NextStar Energy was founded in 2022 as a joint venture between LG Energy Solution and Stellantis, began module production in 2024, and started full-scale electrode and cell production in November 2025. In February this year, LG Energy Solution acquired full ownership, transitioning to a wholly-owned operation. The facility has produced over 1 million battery cells to date, demonstrating robust capacity to meet the rapidly growing North American ESS market demand.
