 바이오플러스(대표 정현규)는 2월 27일 충북 음성 바이오컴플렉스에서 ‘HUGRO Elastin Collagen Launch Ceremony 2026’을 개최하고 국내 최초로 유전자재조합 휴먼 콜라겐 Type Ⅲ의 상용화를 공식 발표했다. 해당 제품은 기존 소·돼지 조직이나 사망 인체 조직에 의존하지 않고, 살아있는 인간 유전자 서열을 기반으로 실험실에서 합성된 고순도 콜라겐이다.

기존 콜라겐 원료는 크게 동물 조직 유래, 사망 인체 조직 유래, 그리고 이번에 개발된 유전자재조합 방식으로 분류된다. 바이오플러스는 E.coli 기반 유전자재조합 시스템을 활용해 피부 재생에 핵심적인 역할을 하는 Type Ⅲ 콜라겐을 GMP 환경에서 안전하고 균일하게 생산한다. 이 콜라겐은 섬유아세포 활성화와 세포외기질 리모델링에 중요한 역할을 하며, 회사 시험 결과 삼중 나선 구조 형성과 생물학적 활성을 입증했다.

‘HUGRO’ 콜라겐은 바이오플러스 고유의 BMTS(생물소재 경피전달 시스템) 플랫폼과 결합되어 기술적 완성도와 상업적 경쟁력을 동시에 확보했다. 이는 기존 HA(히알루론산) 중심 더말필러 시장을 넘어 재생의학 분야에서 차세대 바이오소재 시장을 선도할 가능성을 보여준다.

글로벌 콜라겐 시장은 2024년 약 14조원에서 2033년 약 36조원 규모로 급성장할 전망이며, 재생의학과 고기능성 에스테틱 분야가 성장 동력이다. 바이오플러스는 국내에서 임상 데이터를 확보한 후 미국, 유럽, 중동 등 고기능성 바이오 소재 수요가 높은 해외 시장으로 사업을 확대할 계획이다.

정현규 회장은 “국내 최초를 넘어 글로벌 기준을 선도하는 기업이 되겠다”고 강조했으며, 2025년 음성 신공장 가동으로 생산 능력을 10배 이상 확대해 글로벌 공급 준비를 완료했다고 밝혔다. 향후 스킨부스터, 필러, 수술 후 재생 제품, 의약품 원료 등 다양한 제품군으로 확장한다는 전략이다.

BioPlus officially announced the commercial launch of the world's first genetically engineered human collagen Type III at the "HUGRO Elastin Collagen Launch Ceremony 2026" held on February 27 at the Bio-Complex in Eumseong, Chungbuk. Unlike traditional collagen sources derived from bovine or porcine tissues or deceased human cadavers, this high-purity collagen is synthesized in the laboratory based on the genetic sequence of living human collagen.

Conventional collagen sources fall into three categories: animal-derived, cadaver-derived, and the newly developed recombinant genetic method. BioPlus utilizes an E.coli-based recombinant genetic system to produce Type III collagen, which plays a key role in skin regeneration, under GMP-certified conditions ensuring stable and uniform quality. This collagen promotes fibroblast activation and extracellular matrix remodeling. Company tests confirmed the formation of the triple helix structure and demonstrated its biological activity.

The HUGRO collagen combines BioPlus’s proprietary BMTS (Biomaterial Transdermal System) platform, achieving both technological excellence and commercial competitiveness. This advancement positions the company to lead the next-generation biomaterial market in regenerative medicine beyond the traditional hyaluronic acid-based dermal fillers.

The global collagen market is expected to grow sharply from approximately 14 trillion Korean won in 2024 to about 36 trillion won by 2033, driven by expansion in regenerative medicine and high-functionality aesthetics. After accumulating clinical data domestically, BioPlus plans to expand its business into overseas markets with strong demand for advanced biomaterials such as the United States, Europe, and the Middle East.

Chairman Jung Hyun-gyu emphasized, “We aim not only to be the first domestically but also to set global standards.” With the new Bio-Complex plant in Eumseong scheduled to start operation in 2025, production capacity will increase more than tenfold to fully prepare for global supply. The company further plans to diversify its product portfolio including skin boosters, fillers, post-surgical regeneration products, and pharmaceutical raw materials.

BioPlus’s innovative recombinant human collagen represents a paradigm shift in skin regeneration and treatment by moving beyond animal- and cadaver-based raw materials, offering a high-purity and safe biomaterial for the future.
